Piece to Whole

REPURPOSING SAGRADA FAMILIA SQUARE
BARCELONA, SPAIN

The star shape which had been previously proposed by Gaudi is reinterpreted according to existing realities around Sagrada Familia. Pointing out the most dense streets around Sagrada Familia Square, the new star shape makes the Sagrada Familia a focal point of the city. The conception of the piece to whole aims to divide volumes into small pieces without losing the whole picture. Volumes initially are divided through passageways. This action completely coincides with the city structure of Barcelona since most of the grid blocks are divided through passageways. The conception of deduction also was applied to the facades on the North side of Sagrada Familia. Since these facades are very long, they will attract people here. Compositions are created through intrusions and extrusions of volumes and different material combinations. Totally 6 facade typologies were conceived based on the rational design system that the city structure has. In this way, each element will have an identity, but they also become a part of the whole picture.
