005 Activity Earth House

Istanbul,2021

temporality

Activity Earth House is a permanent house that will be used temporarily. While location of project was specified in the forests, conception could be implemented at different places. The design aims to avoid the non functionality of the house when it is not used by landlords. Since it is a temporary stay place, the house is concealed within nature through a shelter roof. The sustainability of the house is another essential point in this project. The form of shelter roof, which is inspired by houses in terrain and vernacular architecture, is created to host various activities during different seasons of the year. People could sled, climb up or walk on the roof. The walkable roof slope is 26 degrees, whereas the climbable slope is 50 degrees. The living space of the house is a combination of modular systems. This system brings functionality for small spaces, and it is aimed to use small areas for different requirements at different times. There is a direct relationship between the height of the ceiling and privacy. While private areas have a low ceiling height, common areas benefit from the highest ceiling, which emphasizes the own properties of spaces and creates the virtual border between spaces. The use of spaces could be modified with elements such as doors and curtains.

materiality

While exterior walls, partition walls, and niched walls are costructed with rammed earth, the material of floor slabs and footing foundation is concrete.Rammed earth material was proposed as an alternative and organic material in order to reduce carbon emissions arising from the production of conventional construction materials such as concrete and steel. Furthermore, use of organic materials such as straw and grass in project will contribute to carbon zero targets.

sustainability

House is oriented to the south-east axis to benefit from sunlight with maximum level.Windows and openings on the roof are placed to get winter sunlight at a proper angle. Therefore, the roof is designed according to environmental conditions such as avoiding strong winds, rains that could damage rammed earth walls, and getting sunlight. The possibility that shelter roof extensions damage to trees is eliminated by making openings on the roof. In this case, both natures will be protected and the house will have a compatible rhythm with nature. Moreover, another significant feature of the opening is that they enable sunlight to penetrate into interior space.House is off-grid.In addition to natural ventilation and insulation, there are sustainable solutions in this house. Electricity will be generated from sunlight throughout solar panels located on the roof. Necessary energy for heating will be provided from heat pump systems by using solar panels as a heater. The green roof also contributes to the insulation of the house and the rainwater collection system meets daily drinkable water and sanitary requirement.
