Living Facade
Universitat Barcelona Facade Renovation
BARCELONA, SPAIN
The project proposes to refurbish the existing façade of the towers and fill the gap between the two towers with ecological and organic material called “mycelium” which is attained from mushroom roots. Mycelium is a biodegradable alternative to traditional construction materials due to its multiple properties and benefits such as high insulation performance, and natural regulator, being a carbon-negative material, and becoming a versatile solution against the waste of construction materials after demolition. Therefore, through the philosophy of “construction for deconstruction”, the production of mycelium panels has been tested through the small-scale prototype of the project. Mycelium panels grew within 5 days and their growing performance differs according to environmental conditions and their sizes. Hence, two different scale prototypes have been manufactured under the same conditions to measure their performance. Mycelium production and degradation process have been investigated and documented over 35 days and prototypes were disappeared within 30 days.
