Urban Ecotone

La Colonia Güell Masterplan
BARCELONA, SPAIN

The Urban Ecotone project has been developed in La Colonia Güell which is a historical town outside of Barcelona. By using the patchwork technique, the project proposed to create a multi-centered town with different ecological plots and public activities that would encourage social inclusion. Green Belt is one of these ecological plots of green necklace, thus the project went into detail in this area which behaves as a separator zone between the historical center and industrial hub. The project proposes to consolidate these two ecosystems by introducing the term “urban ecotone” which will facilitate the interchange between the entities through new connection lines such as ramps and stairs to overcome handicapped territory, which would increase the diversity of the green belt. By switching housing and industrial ecosystems, the interaction between them would be increased. Open space penetrates inside solid volumes, which is an action to increase the permeability of the area. Functions are scattered through vertical division.
